This August Softball Canada's U14 National Championship tournament returns to Ontario, after a run of events held in Western Canada. The Brampton Blazers organization has stepped up to the plate and will host this large event August 16 to 20, 2017. We caught up with some of the executives with Brampton Minor Girls to get the low down on what this event is all about.
When asked why host this event, John Scalia the VP of Rep replied" We have have successfully run major events in the past, our organization knows what it takes to run them and we have the confidence that they will be a success." Since the 2012 season the Brampton organization has had many big stage events including the Novice Jamboree 2012, the World Junior Championships 2013, & the Bantam Canadian Championships 2014.
Scalia notes "It’s been a while since an event was held in Ontario, we (Brampton) felt that we could bring events back to Ontario and show that it can be done, on budget with many legacy benefits that will serve our community for years to come." Scalia also points out that the City of Brampton has provided tremendous support for these events, and without their involvement they would not be possible. The relationship and support from the City is invaluable to the staging of the event, and it's great to see a municipality supportive and one who understands the benefits that it brings to the community.
The executive team notes that anytime a National event is held and hosted by the Blazer's organization it puts the organization and our city on stage. It means so much for the community, but also the Blazer program, a program that is growing not only on the representative side, but also at the house league and select levels. Events like this raise the profile of the sport in Brampton and encourage more girls to our organization at a grass roots level and raises every level of play everywhere.
Planning is an important aspect of an event like this. Scalia points out that "Our committee is formed and we are well ahead of any other National event held, and I think we did a pretty great job in the past, so I am excited for this event. Our committee is so excited and members are given the autonomy to put their own touch on the area they are in charge of." That likely means some new and unique things at this year's event compared to the past few years.
