With teams commencing tournament play as early as this weekend we’ve taken some time to explain how the UTM Power Rankings will be calculated this year. In the past the rankings have quite simply been based on the votes compiled on the website… this year however that is just one element that makes up the rankings “formula”. On the Power Rankings page, you will see new categories such as Power Points, Coaches Poll, and then the returning Fan Poll. All three of these elements go into making up this year’s Power Ranking calculation. What are “Power Points”? These are earned and tracked on the Power Rankings spreadsheet that you can view on the page. Each age category has a slightly different method of calculating but in simplistic terms teams earn “points” for participating in games (win or lose), additional points for winning games, and for earning medals at tournaments. Your team will appear in the spreadsheet once they've affiliated with PWSA. Squirt & Novice

How does the “Coaches Poll” work? We have a button on the home page that allows coaches to register. Once they register they’re given a link to a ranking survey that is exclusively for coaches. Coaches can edit and adjust their rankings at any point during the season. When changes are made they’re updated each week with the overall Power Rankings. How does the “Fan Poll” work? On the Power Rankings page there are links to each division’s fan poll. These polls are reset each week. We take the results of the polls and update with the release of the new rankings each week. The poll is an open forum which means it relies on people participating and using it for its intended purpose. Skewing the results doesn’t do anyone any good. We ask that if you’re inclined to vote for one team 30+ times – please don’t. The formula applied is then a weighted scale of 40% Power Points, 40% coaches poll and 20% fan poll. (That is what we will try and do at least). League play, US play and exhibition play are not factored into the game tracking. Our game tracking is only as accurate as the info we can find. We try and obtain all the scores and results, if you see we are missing some please tell us.
