(Brantford, ON) UTM's U16 team participated in the UTM/Mohawk College Early Bird Tournament the weekend of May 4 & 5, with games being played at Lion's Park in Brantford. While the weather leading up to the event was less than pleasant the diamonds were deemed open Friday evening, which paved the way to Revolution being able to play 3 games Saturday and 2 additional games Sunday. Overall the team went 4-1-0 which included some good wins vs Top-10 ranked opponents. Coaches & athletes were pleased with the result, the team now will focus on some practice time this week as they head into their next tournament over the May long weekend (Queen of Diamonds)
Game 1 vs Mississauga SW Hurricanes (W 6-4)
Revolution broke an even game in the 5th inning, and then held onto the win vs the Hurricanes. The 4-4 score was broken when Asia Sloat singled on the first pitch scoring Sydney Allison with what would turn out to be the game winning run. The hit was Sloat's second of the game, she also contributed earlier with a double. Tierney Hocquard came into earn the save, pitching a scoreless final inning. Lauren Artt earned the win, she pitched the middle portion of the game, relieving Sarah Kent who started on the rubber for UTM.
Game 2 vs Chatham Golden Eagles (W 8-1)
UTM's pitching trio of Tierney Hocquard, Hayley Shackell and Sarah Kent shut down the Eagles offense, limiting the hit count to only 3 over 7 complete innings. Hocquard pitched the middle portion of the game and stuck out 7 batters over three innings of work. Kent & Shackell added 5 more K's over the course of the game. Offensively Michelle Brooks had a big game with 2-hits, tallying 3-RBI's and she also scored twice. Shackell, Rachel Little & Kaylee Fishback also had multiple hits in this game for Revolution.
Game 3 vs Palmerston Marlins (W 9-2)
Revolution plugged away on offense, using some timely hitting to score enough runs to pull away from the Marlins. For the second straight game of the afternoon it was the UTM pitchers that shined on the diamond. Tierney Hocquard, Sarah Kent and Hayley Shackell again combined together to really stimy the Marlins each inning. Hocquard stuck out 6 batters in her three innings of work. Kent and Shackell pitched the back half of the game and were equally strong. Hocquard helped her own case on offense driving in 3 runs, Kent wasn't far behind as she accounted for 2 additional RBI's.
Game 4 vs Halton Hawks (L 3-6)
UTM played its first game Sunday against a hungry Halton Hawks team, and full credit in the final score as the Hawks walked away with a 6-3 win, ending the perfect weekend for UTM Sunday morning. The Hawks used a big 5th inning rally to come all the way back and then from there didn't give the lead back to Revolution. Game highlights for UTM include Avery Curran's 2 hits, 2 RBI's one of which was a triple. Rachel Little also had a multiple hit game offensively. Tierney Hocquard started the game and pitched well once again. Hayley Shackell and Sarah Kent also pitched once again in this game for Revolution. The runs scored by the Hawks in their 5th inning rally were almost all un-earned as a defensive miscue opened the door.
Game 5 vs Brampton Blazers Gold (W 8-4)
In the second of back to back games Sunday, UTM earned a big win over the Brampton Blazers. In the 4-run 4th inning, UTM was led by Rachel Little, Sarah Kent and Kaylee Fishback who all drove in runs in the inning. Hayley Shackell notched three hits in this game for UTM and scored two big runs. On the mound Tierney Hocquard and Sarah Kent shared the win, pitching the full 7.0 innings scattering 10 hits, and striking out 7 Blazers.
